Testing water treatment options for safer sites
Water quality testing is one part of Winslow's broader commitment to responsible environmental management and delivering construction projects with care for the communities and environments in which we operate.
Construction water management plays an important role in protecting waterways and supporting more sustainable project delivery.
At Winslow, captured water from sediment and bioretention basins is assessed before it is reused for construction activities, dust suppression or released back into the environment.
Water treatment helps ensure it meets applicable environmental water quality standards while reducing turbidity and sediment loads.
The most effective treatment approach can vary from project to project, depending on the soil type and the quality of the captured water.
To identify the right solution, Winslow's Environmental and Sustainability team undertakes "jar tests" using a sample of construction water collected onsite.
During the testing process, the sample is treated with a range of flocculants and/or coagulant additives. These products are assessed to determine which is most effective at removing suspended soil particles from the water column.
The results help project teams select the most environmentally effective treatment approach for the specific site conditions.
By testing treatment options before applying them at scale, Winslow can make informed decisions about water reuse and compliant discharge.
This approach supports better control of sediment and turbidity, reduces the potential impact on downstream waterways and aquatic life, and helps maximise the beneficial reuse of water across construction sites.
